CROUCH, MASSON TO JOIN SDGA HALL OF FAME

Two men who devoted their lives to helping others become better golfers have been recognized and will be honored in 2007 for their tireless devotion to and promotion of the game in South Dakota.
Terry Crouch, formerly of Sioux Falls, and the late Bob Masson of Brookings, will be inducted into the South Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame this summer, bringing the number enshrined to 35 since the Hall of Fame was established in 1977. Crouch, who lives in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Masson were elected to the Hall of Fame during the annual meeting of the SDGA Board of Directors.
Terry Crouch was the head golf professional at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls for 32 years, retiring in 2001. For a period of time, he also served at the club’s General Manager and Director of Golf. A Nebraska native, Crouch worked for his father, Max, for 15 years at the Field Club of Omaha before coming to Minnehaha CC.
During his tenure at Minnehaha CC more than 60 of his students won SDGA championships. Kris Tschetter, a member of the LPGA Tour since 1987 was one of Crouch’s students and in her biography in the LPGA media guide she lists Crouch as one the most influential people in the development of her golf game. Tschetter, along with her brother Mike and Matt Rost of Sioux Falls won AJGA championships while under Crouch’s watch.
Crouch was involved with the organization of the South Dakota Golf Association in 1970 and served as the SDGA’s Professional Golf Advisor. He was a member of the PGA section, serving on that group’s board of directors. He also served as chairman of National Golf Day for the Minnesota Section.
Crouch re-established the caddie program at Minnehaha CC and managed the Jeff Vangen Memorial Caddie Scholarship program for 27 years.
Like Crouch, Bob Masson had a passion for junior golf. Through the junior golf program at Brookings Country Club, Masson had an influence on players who eventually won 35 SDGA championships, state titles in North Dakota and Montana and 11 South Dakota high school individual championships along with 13 titles won by Brookings High School golf teams.
Masson and his wife Ceci owned and operated Parline Golf in Brookings. Twice Parline Golf was recognized by Golf Digest magazine as one of the “Top 100 Golf Shops in America.” Through Parline Golf, Masson helped form the KELO-TV/Parline Junior Golf Tour, a series of junior golf tournaments held each summer throughout South Dakota. This tour became the foundation for what is now the Wells Fargo/SDGA Junior Golf Tour.
Masson’s influence on the game of golf was limited to just Brookings golfers. He conducted clinics at many 9-hole courses in South Dakota that did not have a golf professional. He fostered relationships through these clinics as many of the participants eventually became students, taking individual lessons from Masson in Brookings or at their home course.
Crouch will be inducted during a ceremony held Saturday, July 14 at Prairie Green GC in Sioux Falls. Masson will be inducted posthumously during a ceremony held Saturday July 21 at Brookings CC in Brookings.
