Doris Mernaugh, who passed away in 1988, was one of the more successful players of her era. She defeated Illa Kremer of Sioux Falls 3 and 1 to win the 1953 Match Play Championship played in Huron and finished second in that championship on five other occasions. Among her second-place finishes were in 1948 to Othelia Doering of Parkston and in 1960 to Indy Titterington of Yankton. Both women are enshrined in the SDGA Hall of Fame. Mernaugh reached the semifinals on another occasion and also was a quarterfinalist in the most prestigious women’s championship held at the time. The Women’s Match Play Championship was a week-long event, starting on Monday and concluding with an 18-hole finale on Saturday and attracted all the best players in South Dakota. Mernaugh also served as president of the South Dakota Women’s Golf Association and was very active in the Watertown golf community.
